Basil, the Main Ingredient
A member of the mint family, basil is a leafy plant with a slightly sweet fragrance and the noticeable taste of anise, according to the Ohio State University Department of Horticulture and Crop Science. Some people use it to settle an upset stomach. Basil contains many vitamins and minerals, such as beta-carotene, vitamins A and K, and iron. It has few calories and no cholesterol, according to the Nutrition-and-You website.
Pine Nuts and Garlic
The benefit of pine nuts as a pesto ingredient is their high amino acid or protein. They're also a good source of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Offsetting the positive nutritional values, however, is the fact that pine nuts are high in calories and contain almost double the polyunsaturated fat as they do monounsaturated fat. Garlic in pesto is a flavor enhancer, and regarded as a medicinal food because of its ability to lower cholesterol and act as a natural blood thinner.
Cheese
The ingredient in pesto that gives it a thicker consistency is Parmesan cheese. As with any dairy product, there is high fat and caloric content, but Parmesan is lower in carbs than some cheeses, with as little as 3 grams per ounce. It is a source of calcium and vitamin A. Parmesan in pesto adds flavor and pungent fragrance.
A Healthy Food
Given its healthy, but somewhat high fat and calorie content, pesto is a source of many needed vitamins, nutrients and minerals. It has been a mainstay for centuries in the so-called Mediterranean Diet, famous for contributing to heart health. Because of it many calories, fat and carbs, pesto should be a flavor enhancer for various foods in your diet, but not eaten in excess.

Pasta Preparation:
2 cups Fusilli Pasta/Spiral Pasta
1 tsp Salt
2 tbsp Oil
1 tbsp Finely Chopped Garlic
Bell Peppers
Zucchini
Cherry Tomatoes
Boiled Broccoli
1/2 cup Stock

3-4 tbsp Pesto Sauce
