What People Ate to Survive During the Dust Bowl
The Great Depression was an era of financial toil for nearly everyone in the United States. But those in the Dust Bowl were hit particularly hard - the Southern plains region of the US experienced a drought that led to severe dust storms. Farming grew difficult because of the lack of rain, and people who lived in the Dust Bowl became desperate for food, even more so than others who lived during the Depression.
Dust Bowl meals focused on nutrition over taste.

Barbara BushTribute: Her Favorite Dishes, Whole Plant Based. R.I.P.
To pay tribute to Barbara Bush, a great First Lady, I wear my fake pearls today and cook for you some of her preferred dishes: Yankee Bean Soup, Carrotslaw Salad (recipe from California Bountiful), and Apple Crumble. I worked out whole plant based oil-free recipes of course, see below. Enjoy!
Yankee Bean Soup:
Put in the instant pot 2 cans or 2 cups dried navy beans pre-soaked (small white beans), add 1 chopped onion, 1/2 cup chopped carrots, 1/3 cup celeopry leaves chopped, optional: Lightlife veggie bacon strips chopped, 4 cups vegetable broth, 2 cups soy milk, 2 tbsp liquid smoke, 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper, 2 tsp blackstrap Turn valve on seal, press manual and 15 minutes. Stir when ready and add salt to taste. I did not need any.
Carrot Slaw (recipe seen at California Bountyful show on TV):
Shredd different colored carrots, add 1 tbsp chopped peppermint leaves, the zest of one tangerine or blood orange or orange (organic), after zesting, chop the citrus fruit of your choice into small pieces and add to salad, blend 1/2 cup Meyer lemon juice, 1/4 cup Apple Cider vinegar, 2 tbsp sesame seeds, 2tbsp blackstrap molasses or maple syrup, a pinch of salt, 1/4 tsp chili pepper. Pour blended dressing onto salad, mix well and if needed, add some black pepper and/or salt. I chilled my salad in the fridge for 10 minutes which I think make the flavors really come out. Enjoy!
Apple Crumble (I created this recipe but based it on Mary McDougall's measurements for her Pear and Cranberry Crumble Dessert in the cookbook: The Healthiest Diet on the Planet from Dr. McDougall:
Heat oven to 350 F
Filling:
Core and chop 3 medium Gala Apples into pieces. Mix with 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 cup lemon juice, and 2 1/2 tbsp cornstarch. Mix everything well and pour into glass pie dish.
Topping: Mix 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup almond slices crushed, 1/4 cup white whole wheat pastry flour, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/4 tsp apple pie spice, 2 1/2 tbsp agave nectar. Mix well until it is crumbly and sprea
