1930's Canadian Tamale Pie Recipe. Welcome Friends! Today on the Old Cookbook Show, we are going to make a 1930's Depression era Canadian version of a Tamale Pie Recipe. Tamale Pie probably wasn't something that a lot of Canadians were eating in the 1930's - so this Tamale Pie Recipe was a bit of an exotic anomaly in this cookbook.
Ingredients:
1½ cups cornmeal
1½ tsp salt
2 cups cold water
4 cups boiling water
1 ounce suet
1 onion, chopped
1 pound ground beef or pork
1 cup canned tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
Cayenne pepper to taste
Method:
Preheat oven to 350ºF
Mix cornmeal, salt, and cold water; add boiling water.
Stir well and cook in a double boiler for 1 hour.
Render suet, and cook onion until it browns.
Then add meat and brown it, add tomatoes and cook 5 minutes.
Add salt, pepper and cayenne to taste.
In a greased casserole, add an inch layer of cornmeal.
Add the meat in a layer, and then a final layer of cornmeal.
Cover and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove cover and brown.

Mini Tamale Pies | Delish
Get the full recipe from Delish:
INGREDIENTS
2 boxes Jiffy corn muffin mix
1 c. frozen corn
1 c. sour cream
4 tbsp. melted butter
2 large eggs
nonstick cooking spray
1/2 onion, chopped
kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. chili powder
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 c. shredded Cheddar
1/2 c. Shredded Monterey Jack
1/3 c. red enchilada sauce
Fresh cilantro, for serving
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 400°.
2. Prepare cornbread base: In a medium bowl, combine corn muffin mix, corn, sour cream, butter, and eggs and whisk until evenly combined. Spray one regular sized muffin tin with cooking spray. Using a medium ice cream scoop, scoop batter into muffin tin and bake for 15 minutes, or until golden on top.
3. While the cornbread is still warm, make the cups. Spray the bottom of a small shot glass with cooking spray and press the shot glass down into the center of each cornbread to create cups. Let cool in pan.
4. Meanwhile, make the taco meat: Sauté onions over medium heat. Season with salt, pepper and spices and cook until soft. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the ground beef and stir to break up meat. Season to taste and sauté until cooked through. Remove skillet from stovetop and drain excess fat.
5. Fill the cornbread cups with the taco meat and top with cheeses. Spoon enchilada sauce on top of the meat and broil until cheese begins to brown, about 5 minutes.
6. Top with cilantro, if desired.

Glo's Easy, Delicous Tamale Pie Recipe - (Tastes Just like a BIG Tamale)
Glo's Easy, Delicious Tamale Pie Recipe - (Tastes Just like a BIG Tamale). I've eaten great Tamale Pie Bowls at some California Restaurants. Tamale Pie is not really a Pie. There's no crust. Instead, like Shepard's Pie, there is a crusty topping made by combining cornmeal with fats and spices. Yummmmy.
The main ingredient of my tamale pie is a great roast beef. Of course, you can use pork or even go veggie. Just add lots of spices and lots of love. And add A Pinch of Mexican. - Adding Spice to Your Life.
The recipe for my Tamale Pie is on my cooking web site, Pinch of Mexican.com.
