Vegan key lime pie recipe (without key limes)
Hello and Welcome To Uncle Lou's Kitchen today we'll be showing you how to make Vegan Key lime pie (no key limes)
Key lime pie is a beloved dessert that has been enjoyed for over a century, with its origins rooted in the tropical climate of the Florida Keys. The pie is traditionally made with key limes, a small citrus fruit with a distinctive acidic flavor, which gives the dessert its unique taste. Now even vegans can enjoy this delicious no egg and dairy, cruelty free Key Lime Pie
The history of key lime pie is somewhat unclear, with multiple theories regarding its origin. One popular theory suggests that it was first created by Bahamian settlers in the Florida Keys in the late 1800s. These settlers had access to key limes, which were abundant in the region, and they combined the juice with sweetened condensed milk, which was readily available due to the booming dairy industry. The resulting custard-like filling was then poured into a graham cracker crust, and the dessert quickly became a favorite among locals.
Another theory suggests that the dessert was created by sailors in the 19th century, who used the acidic properties of key limes to preserve their catch of fish during long voyages at sea. They would mix the lime juice with condensed milk and eggs to create a filling that could be baked into a pie. This theory, however, is less widely accepted than the Bahamian settlers theory.
Regardless of its origin, key lime pie quickly became a beloved dessert throughout the United States, with many regions adding their own unique twists to the recipe. In the 1930s, key lime pie became a staple of Southern cuisine, particularly in Florida. The state even passed a bill in 2006 designating key lime pie as its official state pie.
As more people adopt plant-based diets, there has been a growing demand for vegan versions of traditional desserts like key lime pie. Luckily, making vegan key lime pie is easy and delicious, with several substitutes available for the traditional condensed milk.
One popular substitute is coconut milk, which has a similar thickness and creaminess to condensed milk, and a slightly sweet flavor that pairs well with the tangy lime juice. Another option is to use cashew cream, which is made by blending soaked cashews with water until a smooth, creamy consistency is achieved.
In conclusion, key lime pie is a beloved dessert with a rich history rooted in the Florida Keys. While its traditional recipe includes condensed milk, there are several vegan substitutes that can be used to create a delicious plant-based version of the dessert. By using these substitutes and a vegan-friendly crust, anyone can enjoy the tangy, creamy goodness of key lime pie while still adhering to their dietary preferences.
