Vintage Slow-Cooker Grape Jelly Meatballs | Holiday Appetizer Recipe | Southern Living
If you grew up with bouffants, princess phones, and kitchens in avocado green, you probably remember when saucy meatballs first became the rage at church fellowships and neighborhood parties. The secret ingredient is grape jelly, bringing sweetness to the heat and spice of companion ingredients like chili sauce and barbecue sauce. They're always crowd-pleasers in the South, and they’re strictly a dump-and-stir proposition.

Tasty Meatball with Marinara Sauce Recipe:
Ingredients:
- 1.5 lb of ground turkey
- 2 medium sized tomatoes
- 1/2 white onion (or yellow onion)
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1 egg white
- 1 large jar (2 lb) of marinara sauce
- Fresh Basil
- Olive Oil
- Salt
- Pepper
- Dried Red Pepper (optional)
- Italian Seasoning (or Oregano)
Instructions:
1. Dice tomatoes into small pieces. Set aside in a bowl.
2. Use half the onion and chop into small pieces. Set aside in a bowl.
3. Finely chop the garlic cloves. Set aside in a bowl.
4. In a separate bowl, separate the egg white from the egg yolk.
5. Add egg white to the ground turkey. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and red pepper. Mix all together.
6. Roll 2 big tbsp portions of the turkey meat into a ball and lay on parchment paper or foil.
7. Heat the pan at medium high, add oil then the onions and garlic. Make sure not to burn!
8. You can either take out the onions and garlic or push them to the side in the pan and add the meatballs in the pan without touching each other.
9. Cook on each side for about 5-6 minutes. It's okay if it's still a little pink since the meatballs will be simmering in the sauce for 25-30 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
10. Then add the diced tomatoes, marinara sauce, more Italian seasoning and black pepper to your liking.
11. Simmer on low heat for 25-30 minutes.
12. Add the fresh basil. You can leave them whole or roughly chop them to garnish on top.
13. Ready to serve and enjoy!
