Homemade Vegan Snow Cones, Shaved Ice, and Syrups

Ready for a fun treat to beat the heat? Snowcones and shaved ice are the answer!
Julie is going to show you a fancy shaved ice extravaganza and Kathy will make one or more of her favorite floral syrups for an anything but plain snow cone to keep you refreshed.
Julie is going to show you how to use her snowcone machine, but you can make crushed ice in your blender - just add water and ice cubes, then strain through a fine-mesh strainer to get the water out. If you have a Multo - it makes great crushed ice too.
Julie's shaved ice will be topped with a strawberry sauce, a coconut sauce, and a scoop of the pineapple dole whip.
Kathy will make at least one floral syrup, not a surprise there - lol! And make a New Orleans-style snow cone with just ice and syrup. She'll cover some whole food plant-based toppings, and juice-based flavorings.

Pink Blini with Darra Goldstein
Darra demonstrates the recipe for Pink Blini from her new cookbook 'Beyond the North Wind.' These gorgeous deep-pink pancakes were beloved by the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. While cooking them up, Darra will share her expert cultural commentary on the dish's storied history.
Darra Goldstein is the author of Fire + Ice, which was nominated for James Beard, IACP, and The Art of Eating awards. The founding editor of Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture, named Publication of the Year by the James Beard Foundation, Darra also serves as series editor of California Studies in Food and Culture, and has written for Gourmet, Saveur, Bon Appétit, and The New York Times.
