How To make Spicy Fruit Compote
1 Two-inch cinnamon stick
6 Whole cloves
1/4 c Sugar
1/2 c Port, sweet red wine or
-apple Juice 1/2 c Water
2 tb Lemon juice
1 pk (11 ounces) mixed dried
-Fruit 2 Bananas, sliced
Tie cinnamon stick and cloves in cheesecloth bag. Heat cheesecloth bag, sugar, port, water and lemon juice to boiling in 2-quart saucepan. Stir in dried fruit. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer uncovered 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fruit is plump and tender. Refrigerate uncovered about 3 hours, stirring occasionally, until chilled.R cheesecloth bag. Stir bananas into fruit mixture until coated wit syrup. Drain fruit, reserving syrup. Serve fruit with some of the syrup Serve with sour cream or plain yogurt if desired. 6 SERVINGS; 220 CAL PER SERVING.

Nowruz is the Afghanistan/Iranian New year which falls on or around March 21 of the Gregorian calendar and it marks the beginning of spring. In Afghanistan, people prepare many delicious dishes on nowruz and one of them is called “Haft mewa” which is a mixture of seven different dried fruits and nuts. Half mewa stands for seven fruits but it doesn’t have to be exactly seven. Seven (more or less) dried fruits and nuts are combined into a bowl and hot water is added to let the flavors meld into a delicious syrup. It is quite easy to make this delicious recipe and it would be very convenient to find pre-peeled nuts, if not soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before peeling. Generally used ingredients for haft mewa are raisins, pistachios, walnuts, dried apricots, almonds, and Russian/Persian olives which is called senjed in Persian. Senjed is an unbelievably delicious, dried fruit that comes from the oleaster tree that people like to binge on just on its own. Once all dried fruits are combined into a bowl and submerged into hot water, you would leave it at room temperature overnight and serve cold the next day. Place the rest in the fridge to keep it cold and fresh.

What you need to make haft mewa
Pistachio
walnuts
black raisins
Red raisins
silvered almonds
Green raisins
Russian Olive/ Persian Olive (senjed)
Organic Dried Apricots (with and/or without seeds)
Blanched whole almonds
1. To peel the nuts, boil some water.
2. Add nuts (pistachio and walnuts) into two small bowls
3. Add hot boiling water and let it soak for at least 30 minutes
4. Gently peel the skin off pistachio and walnuts using your hands
5. Wash all dried fruits in warm water (raisins, pistachios, walnuts, dried apricots, almonds, and Russian/Persian olives/Senjed)
6. In a big bowl, combine all dried fruits and add hot water to let the flavors meld into a delicious syrup
7. leave it at room temperature overnight and serve cold the next day. Place the rest in the fridge to keep it cold and fresh.
