Cat food cats go crazy for... and how to make it!
Homemade Cat Food with Chicken that turned our Finicky Felines into Ravenous Land Sharks... We still use some dry cat food, but it is the same stuff that our cats stuck their noses up at and picked at for the last couple of years. I think you'll find this homemade food is much cheaper than even basic dry kibble!
Below is an ingredient list and supply list:
(I've included Amazon affiliate links to some of them, especially the ingredients and equipment I ordered from Amazon myself! And, full disclosure, I would get a small commission if you were to purchase a product through any of the links.)
To ensure you have what you need on hand, here is the basic ingredients:
Bone-in chicken quarters (legs, thighs, etc. You need dark meat. Bone-in is less expensive and more nutritious when you cook it down. The drawback: picking the bones out of the cooled cooked chicken.) 10 pounds
White Rice - for this cat food recipe I used 2.5 cups. Some people use oatmeal, and this is optional, but my cats LOVE white rice.
Pumpkin - I used roasted pumpkin (homegrown), but canned pumpkin puree will also work. DO NOT use pumpkin pie filling - cats shouldn't eat sugar. With 14 lbs of turkey, I use about 6-8 cups. This is really good for cat digestion and urinary tracts.
Ground Flax Seed - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. This is for protein, fiber, and healthy fats that cats need, and it thickens the food right up - it looks a bit soupy at first. Make sure it is finely ground. Brown or golden flax seed meal will work. Whole flaxseed: Ground flaxseed:
Here is a list of some of the equipment I use in this video along with links to them on Amazon:
16 qt stock pot:
24 qt stock pot:
Mesh Strainer:
Do not use salted or seasoned anything in your cat's food - too much salt really damages their kidneys, and common human seasonings like garlic and onion actually destroy their red blood cells. Yikes! It's a short ingredient list. We filmed this real time, but sped up the part where my daughter and I pull the chicken - that is by far the most labor intensive part... but don't try and skip it with boneless meat. Our feline friends need the high fat dark meat, and their bodies get additional nutrition from the other goodies that are extracted from the bones during the extended cooking process.
Let me know how it goes! Our 9 kitties give it 2 paws up with a Meow for extra points!
Homemade Cat Food Recipes Vet Approved | Basic Blueprint
This easy homemade turkey and pumpkin pate cat food recipe make 5-6 days of food for the average cat. It costs the same or less than many commercial and premium cat foods out there that are laden with by-products, chemicals, and ingredients that are unfit for human consumption.
My recipes follow a basic blueprint:
* Choose 1 pound of protein that is lightly cooked in coconut oil
* Add 1 cup of water or bone broth (without the added onion and garlic and salt)
* Add the needed calcium, taurine, trace minerals and vitamins, and grass-fed beef organ meat. All ingredients in the Holistic Vet Blend nutrient mix are human-grade.
* There are optional add-ins such as 1-2 eggs, greens (kale, spinach, parsley), pumpkin, carrot, and some squash to name a few. You can add 2-4 TBSP to the recipe of any one of these.
* Last but not least you will need an Omega-3 source. Choose from
sardines in water, mackerel, salmon, or HVB Icelandic Omega -3 fish oil.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
It's very important to understand that if your dog won't eat kibble anymore, it's a dog's way of saying it does not like the way it feels when it eats what it is given and that its system is tilting out of balance. The best and only option is to turn to a natural diet that will help the dog get back to its natural processes as quickly as possible. This, or face thousands in vet bills down the road.
So How to Get a Picky Dog to Eat Quickly?
First it's important to understand that dogs can eat many types of human food and in fact, given your dog refuses to eat dog food, it's an essential and healthy way to get them back eating again. I'll share more on how to get your dog eating kibble again later.
So in an emergency situation where your dog or puppy has not eaten for days or very little in weeks, use the following recipe:
I'll use a 25lb dog as illustration, simply adjust portion sizes for your dogs weight.
Ingredients:
1 can of sardines (packed in water)
1 cooked egg (de-shelled)
1 Tablespoon of plain yoghurt
2 Tablespoons of cooked brown rice
Directions:
Open the can of sardines, drain off the water and add to the dogs food bowl. Hard boil one whole egg, remove the shell, cut into pieces and add to the food bowl. Add one tablespoon of plain yoghurt. Add 2 tablespoons of cooked brown rice to the bowl and mix everything up before serving to your dog.
By adding some natural foods to the equation and a dog not eating because of discontent will not be an issue. Dogs will instinctively recognize their food source as appropriate and owners will be able to see a dog in the miraculous process of getting well. Within a short period of time, there will be shinier eyes, hair and whitened teeth.
Bad breath will disappear as will malodorous gas and bouts with irritable bowel problems. Any recurrent infections will clear up quickly and you'll notice a restoration of energy and alertness you have never before seen in your own dog.
