How To make Braised Buckwheat Kernels
Servings: 6 1 c Uncooked medium buckwheat
-kernels (kasha) 1 Egg
2 1/2 c Boiling water
2 tb Margerine or butter
1 1/2 ts Beef bouillon granules
1/4 ts Salt
1/4 ts Pepper
Braised Buckwheat Kernels Popular in Russia where it's called Kasha, this hearty style side dish is prefect for a hurry-up meal. (Sue's note: This stuff is good!!) Mix buckwheat kernels and egg in ungreased 10-inch skillet. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until kernels are seperated and brown. Stir in remaining ingredients; reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 5 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and buckwheat kernels are tender. Makes 6 servings. Recipe from Betty Crocker's "30 Minutes or Less" Cookbook

Buckwheat Groats Recipe:
1 cup oat groats or buckwheat oats
2 cups water
Put all ingredients in a bowl and let sit overnight 8-12 hours. Strain well!

► 2 white onions
►200g chestnut mushrooms
►50 ml vegetable oil
►parsley, paprika, salt, pepper
►1 leek

► deep frying pan

1. Prepare the veggies
2. Fry the veggies in a deep frying pan for 2- 3 min
3. Add the mushrooms and fry them for 7- 8 min
4. Add the spices
5. Add the buckwheat and mix well
6. DONE

How to make Kasha Varnishkes
This Jewish side dish recipe was donated by a friend. It was his grandmother's. Kasha Varnishkes is made with onion, buckwheat groats, and bow tie (farfalle) pasta. His grandmother insisted the onions must only be cooked in chicken fat, but I think you can safely substitute a frying oil like pure olive oil (not extra virgin; it burns at frying temperature). This probably won't be one of my most popular videos, but it was fun to make and I like the authenticity of the recipe. His grandmother was from Israel.
