Making an Apple Pie from Rehydrated Homemade Freeze Dried Apple Pie Filling
Making an apple pie from homemade freeze dried apple pie filling.
Rehydrating some more apple pie filling that we had freeze dried almost 2 years ago and making an apple pie. The mini pies we made a couple days earlier for our rehydration test worked so well, we decided to make a full size pie with the rest of the freeze dried pie filling we had.
We had made and frozen the pie filling a couple years before we bought the Harvest Right freeze dryer and freeze dried it.
We have started putting our videos up at
Apple Filling for Crisp or Pie & Crisp Topping
Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
10 cups apple slices -- sliced firm cooking apple
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
dash nutmeg
1 cup butter -- cold
1 1/4 cups flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 cup rolled oats
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup brown sugar
Apple filling: Mix the first 5 ingredients together and pack firmly in the baking pan(s).
One, 10 x 15 pan or Two, 8 x 8 pans (or Three, 7x7 pans for freeze drying - don't bake)
Crisp topping: Mix, don't blend, the last 6 ingredients together using pastry knifes or pulsing in a food processor. The butter should still be in small bits; do not cream.
Evenly spread the topping over the filling and pack firmly.
Bake at 350F for 45 to 60 minutes.

Apple Cherry Pie
Tart Cherries and sweet apples are a great combination for a pie. I know you'll enjoy this one!
Apple Cherry Pie Recipe | Episode 136
Apple Cherry Pie Recipe | Easy Cherry Apple Pie
Honestly, I am not a super fan of fruit pies. I really don't know why because I love fruit. Apple pie is ok, blueberry pie is meh, cherry pie is my least favorite. HOWEVER, when I tried to combine fruit in a pie, I was blown away. This is by far the MOST delicious combination! I couldn't believe how amazing it turned out! The tartness of the apples perfectly balance out the sweet cherries. And the smell...oh my goodness, the SMELL!!! I have never smelled anything this amazing coming from my oven. It even beats the smell of fresh chocolate cake for me. And that is saying something! This apple cherry pie is unlike any pie you will ever have and it is a showstopper! Not to mention, it is insanely easy to make!
Thank you so much for watching!

| Ingredients |
4 Cups Thinly Sliced Apples (About 3 medium apples. I used 2 granny smith and 1 Honeycrisp)
4 Tablespoons Butter
1 Tablespoon Brown Sugar
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg4 Cups Frozen Pitted Sweet Cherries
3/4 Cup Sugar
1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
5 Tablespoons Cornstarch
1 Double Crust Pie Dough
Eggwash
| Instructions |
Peel and thinly slice apples. Set aside sliced apples, and roughly chop reserved apple peels.
In a small sauce pan over medium high heat, melt butter. Add apple peels, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir and reduce heat to low and simmer for about 7 minutes. Set aside.
Prepare cherries by straining them and reserving the juice. Add cherries to the apples in a large bowl. Measure out 1/4 cup of the remaining cherry juice and add to the bowl.
Using a fine mesh strainer, strain butter and apple mixture. Add butter to the cherry and apple bowl. Also add vanilla, sugar, and cornstarch. Toss gently and set aside.
Prepare a pie dish by greasing it with butter. Gently roll out the pie dough to fit the dish. Trim and tuck in excess dough. Pour filling into the pie dish. Feel free to top the pie with any pie designs you like.
Brush pie crust with egg wash. (1 Egg + 1 Teaspoon Water beaten)
Bake in a 450 degree F oven for 10 minutes on the lower rack. THEN reduce oven to 350 degrees F and gently cover with aluminum foil to protect crust. Bake until center is bubbling. This could take anywhere from 1 hour and 10 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
TIP: Place a baking sheet underneath the pie to catch any juice that may fall.
Place a ramekin filled with hot water into the oven with the pie to create a steam that will keep the crust from burning.
Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes.
Enjoy!
