PODCAST FOR THIS EPISODE: This is our 300th episode of Cavalcade of Food!! It's hard to believe, but 10 years and 300 episodes later here we are!
It's been a wonderful journey and so much fun meeting our food friends from literally all over the world! Thank you for all the comments, suggestions, tips, support, and kindness you have shown over these many years! But most of all thank you for sharing so many wonderful memories that the recipes, appliances and housewares have sparked! That really makes it all so much fun!
We wanted to make something that represents the spirit of Cavalcade of Food! Something that is easy to make without a lot of fuss, is old-fashioned and inspired from a vintage recipe, and tastes good! We felt this cake hit all those marks!
One Bowl Applesauce Cake
2 1/4 cups flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, softened (cut into small pieces) 1 cup molasses 1 egg 1 cup applesauce 3/4 cup raisin/currents or other dried fruit
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda and cinnamon. Add butter and cut into flour mixture using a pastry blender, two knives or your fingers.
Add molasses, egg and applesauce. Beat well. Stir in dried fruit.
Pour batter into a greased and floured 8x8 baking pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of cake comes out clean.
Cool on rack. Top cake with a dusting of powdered sugar, a cream cheese frosting, or a glaze made with a little lemon juice and powdered sugar.
1935 Pennsylvania Dutch Apple Sauce Cake Recipe - Old Cookbook Show
Today on the old cookbook show we're doing a Pennsylvania Dutch Applesauce Cake recipe from one of our newest Old Cookbooks. This is an heirloom recipe that is vaguely like a snackin' cake recipe from Betty Crocker.
Dutch Apple Sauce Cake Recipe: 2 cups flour 1 cup apple sauce 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup raisins ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup butter 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon cloves 1 grated nutmeg
Mix butter, sugar and cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon. Mix the baking soda in the applesauce, then add the flour and apple sauce to the mixture. Bake in a moderate oven.
