Homemade Baked Pinto Beans
Making your own beans will save you money if you are buying them in cans.
Very easy to make with only 4 ingredients.
3 cups of beans (I used Pinto Beans)
Half Medium Size-Onion
3-4 Garlic Cloves
Salt
Instructions:
Wash your beans
In a large stockpot, fill with water (3/4 full )
Once it comes to a boil add your beans and let them cook on low to medium heat for 1-2 hours. Check on them often. Add more water if needed.
Add the garlic, onion, and salt. Cook for another 30min to an hour.
If you use a crockpot, add the onion and garlic at the beginning.
Once they are done you can fry them or serve them as is.
Make sure they have completely cooled before refrigerating.
How to Make Tex-Mex Charro Beans – Mexican Cowboy Beans
Charro beans are a traditional tasty Mexican bean dish named after the Mexican Cowboys or Charros. This Tex-Mex Charro Bean recipe is simple to make and is the perfect side dish for steaks and BBQ.
Frijoles charros is Cowboy Beans in Spanish. This traditional Mexican dish is a favorite throughout Texas and the southwest United States.
Charro beans can be made with bacon, ham, chorizo, sausage or most cuts of pork. Stewed with onions, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro and chilli peppers… they are delicious!

Hillbilly Jilly Tex-Mex Charro Beans Recipe – Cowboy Charros
Ingredients
● 2/3 pound (2 cups) dried pinto beans
● 1 onion chopped
● 1 bell pepper – any color chopped
● 3 large tomatoes
● 3 cloves garlic
● 1 cup Hatch Green Chiles, Anaheim peppers or Jalapenos
● 1/8 cup chopped Cilantro
● 5 strips of cooked bacon – reserve bacon grease
● 1 teaspoon cumin powder
● 1 teaspoon black pepper
● Salt to taste – we usually use about a teaspoon and a half -
beans can really soak up a lot of salt so be sure to taste
Directions
1. Wash and soak beans overnight or for at least a couple of
hours
2. Bring beans to a boil in a large pot of water over medium heat
for 1½ to 2 hours
3. Fry bacon - save bacon grease
4. Sauté onions, bell peppers, garlic and tomatoes
5. Add bacon to vegetable mixture and sauté another minute or
two
6. Add sauteed vegetables and Cumin to pot
7. After simmering for about an hour, add Cilantro and green
chiles to pot
8. Simmer over medium low heat for additional 1 1/2 to 2 hours
or until done
Note: Add jalapenos to increase heat. Be sure to keep an eye on
beans, adding water when necessary. Be careful not to
overcook, as Charros are meant to be firm, not mushy.

These refried beans are sometimes called runny, sticky and retefritos…and the restaurants will serve their refried beans based on the dish being ordered.
… but the first secret is that it all starts with a good pinto bean recipe.
For Terry’s favorite pinto beans recipe we’re gonna use:
– 2.5 C of Casserole Pinto Beans – these our are FAVORITE brand of beans
– 2 Garlic Cloves
– 2 Strips of Thick Cut Hickory & Mesquite Smoked Bacon
– About half J & B Salt Pork
_ A little more or a little less of each ingredient, to your preference
and
– 2 tsp of APC OG, you can salt to taste later
The cooking process for these is super simple in the crock pot. NO soaking needed. You just need to set it to high to get them simmering and check it every hour or so with a little stir. Depending on the crock pot these should take about four to five hours MAX!
And BONUS! In this video we’re also gonna show you what I call the THREE STAGES OF REFRIED BEANS! Stage 1 is the runny bean, perfect for scooping up with a Mexican spoon. Stage 2 is a little drier bean cooked with a little lard perfect for spreading on a tortilla or on a plate. And Stage 3 we add a little more yummy lard and take them to a little toasty finish, incorporating all of the yummy crispy goodness from the bottom of the pan. I love these for chalupas because they won’t make your tortillas soggy and the flavor, oh baby is several notches above the other two.

✅Ingredients
• 1 pound dried navy beans
• 1 pound diced bacon
• 1 medium yellow onion diced
• 2 bell peppers diced (red and green)
• 2 cups ketchup
• 2 cups beef broth
• 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
• 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 2 tablespoons ground mustard
• 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
✅Instructions
1️⃣ Place navy beans into a bowl or pot and fill with water until covered. Let beans soak 12 hours, or overnight.
2️⃣ Drain and rinse soaked beans and then place into a clean large oven-safe pot with lid. Fill with water to cover once again and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let beans simmer 1 hour, until beans are tender. Once cooked, drain well and return to pot.
3️⃣ Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
4️⃣ Add uncooked diced bacon to the beans along with onions and bell peppers. Stir in ketchup, beef broth, Worcestershire, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ground mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, salt, and pepper
5️⃣ Bake, covered, in the 300 degree oven for 3 to 3 1/2 hours.
Don't have an oven-safe pot? Transfer the bean mixture to a 9x13 pan or 3 quart casserole dish. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake as directed.
Want to use canned beans? You can use four 15-ounce cans of navy beans instead. Drain and rinse well. Skip steps 1 and 2 and add your rinsed beans in step 5.
