Vintage Recipe: Sweet and Sour Baked Beans // Great For Cookouts
Today's recipe is a unique way to make baked beans. It combines 2 of my favorite things: beans and pineapple! This recipe might not look appealing to some, but I think this recipe really elevates canned baked beans. The pineapple, pepper, and vinegar give the beans brightness, while the soy sauce and brown sugar deepen the sugary flavor of the beans. If you make this recipe, I hope you enjoy it, and let me know how it turned out in the comments!
Original 1984 Recipe:
2 (16 oz.) cans pork and beans (I used a 28 oz can)
4-5 frankfurters, cut in bite-sized pieces (I did not use)
1 (8oz.) can pineapple chunks, drained (I cut the chunks into thirds)
1/4 c. chopped green pepper
2 Tbsp. firmly-packed brown sugar
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
1 Tbsp. cider vinegar
Heat oven to 375°. In a 2 quart casserole combine all ingredients. Bake 40 minutes or until bubbly around edges. Serves ten (1/2 cup) servings.
HOW TO COOK FRESH GREEN BEANS: Delicious Easy Recipe for Green Beans with Bacon, Onion & Sour Cream
This Green Bean Recipe is absolutely delicious, and it happens to be Keto-friendly. Made from fresh green beans, it adds the crunch of bacon, the flavor of onion, and the creaminess of sour cream for the perfect combination. If you're looking for a Thanksgiving side dish, or want a vegetable that even your pickiest eaters will eat, this is it. Read on for the easy recipe.
Green Beans
1 lb. fresh green beans, ends cut off and trimmed
3 slices of thick quality bacon
1/4 cup chopped white onion
2-3 heaping Tbsp. sour cream
salt & pepper to taste
olive oil for frying
After trimming the ends off the fresh green beans, cut to desired size or leave long, and place in boiling water for no more than 10 minutes. (This will make them more tender, but you don't want to fully cook them.)
Cut bacon into small pieces and fry in large skillet until crispy. Remove bacon from frying pan and place on paper towels to allow excess oil to drain. Remove some, but not all, of the bacon grease from the frying pan. (This will add additional bacon flavor when cooking grean beans, but you'll likely need to add a little olive oil to it for frying.)
After green beans have boiled for 10 minutes, drain water and place green beans into skillet with bacon grease & olive oil. Cook over medium high heat, adding chopped onion, bacon pieces, and two to three heaping Tablespoons of sour cream. Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Remove from stove and enjoy!
