My 16-Month-Old Made Homemade Animal Crackers!
This is a big occasion — my first recipe video with Georgie! My new homemade Animal Crackers recipe is so easy that even George, at 16 months, was able to help. Now you can make them at home, too! Written Recipe:

Consider this my homage to store-bought animal crackers—a long-time favorite for a lot of families, including my own. But this recipe is particularly special for me because it was my first time baking in the kitchen with George lending a helping hand!
George (and I!) adore our Sprout’s Sous Chef Toddler Tower — I’m honestly sorry I didn’t get it sooner! He is climbing up and down the tower from morning to night to help his parents at the counter. I’ll sacrifice a banana, orange, or carrot and let him stand with us and chop it up. It’s really given us all hours of entertainment, and he loves having a job to do.
These homemade animal crackers taste similar to a Graham cracker because I include whole wheat and cinnamon, and George loves them! He gets them as a potty training reward—and I get them as a reward for helping potty train! Give them a go, whether or not YOU'RE potty training at the moment. :)

Animal Crackers Cookies
Recipe:
Prep Time: 15 Mins
Cook Time: 8-10 Mins
Yields: 24
Ingredients
1 Cup - All Purpose Flour
1/8 Cup - Dark Brown Sugar
1/8 Cup - Sugar
1/4 Teaspoon - Baking Soda
1/8 Teaspoon - Cinnamon
1/8 Teaspoon - Salt
2-2.5 Tablespoons - Milk
1 Tablespoon - Honey
1/2 Teaspoon - Vanilla
Heat oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with a silicone mat. In a food processor combine the flour, sugars, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Pulse a few times. Add cold butter. Pulse.
Remove from food processor, flatten the dough into a disk and roll out with rolling pin. The dough will be a bit tacky, so you need to sprinkle flour on the dough, rolling pin and cookie cutters. Cut out animals shapes and transfer onto baking sheet.
Bake for 8-10 minutes. Until slightly puffed and lightly golden brown

Electric Pink Food Gel (Affiliate Link):
Ingredients
12 Tablespoons unsalted butter softened
1 ½ cups granulated sugar 300g
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon Princess emulsion¹ or almond extract optional
1 teaspoon salt
4 ½ cups all-purpose flour 560g
Icing
2 cups powdered sugar 230g
1 Tablespoon meringue powder
3 Tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Food coloring² optional
Nonpareil sprinkles optional
Instructions
00:00 Introduction
00:27 Preheat oven to 350F (175C).
00:33 In a large bowl (or in a stand mixer), use an electric mixer to beat butter and sugar together until well-creamed and thoroughly combined.
00:58 Add egg, salt, and extracts, and beat until combined.
02:13 With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, stirring until completely combined.
03:13 Divide dough into two equal parts. Lightly flour a clean surface and roll one portion of dough to be ¼” thick.
03:50 Cut out animal shape, cutting cookies as close together as possible then regroup any scraps and re-roll to get more cookies. Repeat with second half of dough once you have finished with the first.
04:15 Transfer cookies to parchment paper lined baking sheet, spacing at least 1 inch apart.
05:00 Bake in 350F (175C) oven until cookies are just beginning to turn a light golden brown, about 8-10 minutes. Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes on baking sheet before transferring to cooling rack to cool completely before icing.
ICING
05:15 Whisk together powdered sugar and meringue powder. Add water and vanilla extract. Use an electric mixer to beat until soft peaks form. Stir in food coloring, if using.
07:05 Holding cookies gently by their base, dip the surface of each cookie in the icing. Return to cooling rack or a wax paper lined baking sheet and sprinkle immediately with nonpareils, if using. Allow icing to harden before enjoying (about 15-30 minutes).
Notes
¹”Princess” emulsion tastes a bit like almond and lemon extract. It’s available in most cake shops or sometimes in the baking section of your grocery store, and you can also find it here on Amazon. If you can’t find it, that’s fine, use almond extract or leave out.
²I used Americolor gel “electric pink” food coloring
