How to make Apple Brown Betty
???????????????????? ???????????????????? ???????????????????? ???????????????????????? ????
Weirdly proud I discovered this little dessert! With the current economic situation I was sat wondering what is a budget friendly sweet dish that people could realistically make. I see loads of absolutely incredible bakes on instagram that are way beyond my skill set, kitchen appliances and budget and this dessert is so simple and you don't need many ingredients. I was sat looking at freshly picked apples and bread and asked my Nana is there such a thing as apple Bread and Butter pudding and she suggested the Apple Betty - off I went to Google to find a recipe and discovered various methods but there are various ways you can make it to your taste too!
You can tuck into this traditional American baked pudding, made with sweetened and spiced apples with buttered bread crumbs on top that was invented for when times are lean as you don't need many ingredients for this humble pudding.
Did you know? According to “The Oxford Companion to Food,” the dish gets its name from its creator — an African-American woman of the same name. The “Brown” in Brown Betty is said to denote her skin color, having mixed racial origins. Naming desserts after those who create them was a staple of colonial times.
???????????????????????????????????????????? -
• 2 cups toasted breadcrumbs
• 40g unsalted butter, melted
• 3-4 Granny Smith apples, sliced
• 40ml (2 tbsp) lemon juice
• 3/4 cup brown sugar
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon (I used ginger)
???????????????????????? -
1. Peel the apples and slice them into 1/2-inch thick wedges.
2. You can tear the bread into very small pieces, make bread crumbs. I toasted the bread first before making into crumbs/chunks.
3. Use a 9-inch by 9-inch baking dish then add one-third of the breadcrumbs, one-third of the brown sugar, and one-half of the apple slices.
4. Repeat these layers once more, then finish with a third layer of breadcrumbs and brown sugar. Sprinkle a little bit of sugar over the top, cover with foil and bake in a 375-degree oven until the apples are tender, about 40 minutes.
5. Remove the foil and bake 5-10 more minutes to brown the top.
6. Serve with ice cream, whipped cream, custard for extra comfort feels. Enjoy!
Apple Brown Betty for Two
A layer of gooey yummy caramel sauce forms as this Apple Brown Betty cooks caramelizing the apples. It's apple pie meets apple crisp!
Ingredients:
2 cups apples, peeled and sliced. I used granny smith apples.
2 tsp lemon juice
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp salt
1/4 cup butter
Directions:
Peel and slice apples, about 1/4 inch thick and squeeze lemon juice over the top.
Combine 1/3 cup flour, 1/3 cup sugar, 2 Tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp nutmeg and 1/8 tsp salt in a blender or food processor.
Pulse until combined.
Add in butter, 1 Tbsp at a time, pulsing between each addition.
It will look like wet sand and begin to clump together.
In a small baking dish, about 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 inch. layer half of the apples.
Sprinkle apples with 1/2 of crumble mixture. Repeat with remaining apples and crumble mixture.
Bake at 375 degrees F. for 20 - 25 minutes or until hot and bubbly and crumble topping is golden brown.
Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving to allow juices to thicken up.
