How To make Fry Bread, My Personal Recipe (Baking Powder Recipe)

1 c Whole wheat flour
1 Half cup cornmeal
4 tb Baking powder
2 tb Sugar
1 Fourth teaspoon salt
1 c Warm milk (water can be
Substituted if desired) Oil or Shortening for Frying
Fry bread is one of the most popular and widespread of the modern Native American Indian foods. There are two main types of this bread that are used for everything from a quick snack to an everyday dinner bread. In the North and East regions, a fried yeast bread is most popular, while in the South and west regions a recipe utilizing baking powder in lieu of yeast is the more common form. In Texas the Alabama-Coushatta use the same recipe as the Navajo Fry Bread listed below.
In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk and knead briefly with lightly oiled hands until smooth. Rub the remainder of the one tablespoon of oil over the dough. Cover and let sit in a warm area for about 30 minutes. Either pat or roll out enough dough to fit in the palm of your hand in a circle about one quarter inch thick. Deep fry in a hot 350 degree oil for about one minute per side or until golden brown. Makes 10-12 pieces.
Note: Dough can also be cut into triangles, squares or perfect circles if rolled out and a cookie cutter like device is used. Serve with honey, maple syrup, or as a bread for meals.

Knead until the dough is soft/smooth and well kneaded. Heat the oil on medium high heat in a frying pan. Then its hot, either roll out a piece of the dough into a circle or oval shape, or shape it with your hands instead, then carefully add it into the oil. Depending on how big your pan is you can add 2 or 3 to the pan. Fry them until they are golden on both sides turning once or twice when its puffed up and cooked all the way through, remove from the oil and strain it on paper towels. And repeat the process until all of the breads are fried.
Then make the meat, in a pot add the meat and the onions and seasoning and stir. Cook until the meat is no longer pink, then add the beans and a little water and cook until the beans are cooked and hot and combined with the flavors of the meat mixture.
Take the Fry bread and place it on a plate and top with any of the topping choices that you prefer. Enjoy!!

How to Make Native American Fry Bread
Native American Fry bread Recipe!!! Thanks for watching the LIVE video, here is the recipe!
Let me know if you make it! To learn more about Native American cooking, see if your local library carries either of the books mentioned below! I have them both, and they both have delicious recipes that I love to make for my family.
Fry bread
4 cups AP flour; if using self rising, omit the salt and baking powder
3 TBSP baking powder
2 tsp table salt
1 1/2-2 cups water, lukewarm
1-2 cups High heat oil, lard or shortening, depending on your pan size. You can also add a 1/4 cup of shortening or lard to your oil for added flavor. You don’t want your oil to come to the top of your pan, or it will overflow when you add in your dough.
Combine your dry ingredients in a large bowl. Slowly add in about a quarter cup of water and begin to mix. Continue to add a little water at a time until your dough starts to come together. Knead in your bowl, or on the counter if it’s easier, for 5-7 minutes. Place back in your bowl and cover the bowl with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let sit for 30-45 min.
Heat 1”-2” of oil in a Dutch oven, deep pot, or skillet, until almost “smoking”. The bread needs to cook quickly.
Pinch a small size ball of dough off, and use your hands to start shaping/flattening it. You can roll out your dough with a rolling pin, or stretch it out using your hands. Poke a hole in the middle and gently place the dough in the pan AWAY from you. Cook for 20-30 seconds and carefully flip over. Cook for an additional 20-30 seconds until GBD (golden brown and delicious), and remove to a paper towel lined plate to drain any excess oil. Serve with a hearty stew, alone, or with honey and powdered sugar.
