Filet mignon was the first cut of beef I ever learned the name of. It’s one of 3 primary cuts (ribeye, strip, filet mignon), and likely the most controversial.
It’s rare that you’ll find a steak aficionado or nerd (like me) who will say its their favorite cut, and most will even say its overrated. This is due to the lack of marbling & flavor, and also the premium price tag.
However, I believe the filet mignon is the ultimate crowd pleaser. It will always be tender, and even the pickiest of eaters will enjoy it.
Its also a great steak if you want to experiment trying different levels of doneness. If you believe you only like “well-done” steaks, try a filet cooked to medium, and work your way down to rare.
Hint: Walk by the meat section every time you go to the store and get an idea of what the average price/lb filet mignon costs. Every once in a while there are major discounts, take advantage!
