How To make Black Velvet Cake
2 cups slivered almonds
slightly toasted
12 ounces chocolate chips
1 package devil's food cake mix
1 package instant chocolate pudding :
(3 1/2 oz)
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Sprinkle 1/2 cup almonds on bottom of greased 10-inch tube pan. Set aside rest of almonds and chocolate chips. Place remaining ingredients in mixer bowl. Beat 4 minutes. Fold in chips and almonds, then pour into pan. Bake in 350 F oven 60 to 70 minutes. Cool 15 minutes and remove from pan. Serve with topping of whipped cream if desired. Note from me: A nice touch would be to puncture finished cake with long-tined fork. Dribble over cake about 1/4 cup Kahlua. Then serve with sweetened whipped cream flavored with almond or vanilla extract.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 c unbleached flour
1 ts baking powder
1/4 ts fine salt
2 tb black or natural cocoa
1/2 c oil
1 c sugar
2 ts lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
2 room temperature eggs
1/2 c room temperature buttermilk
1 ts vanilla extract
Frosting:
16 oz soft cream cheese
2-3 c *sifted* confectioners sugar
1 ts pure vanilla
1 tb heavy cream {optional}
¼ ts fine salt

Okay I am SO EXCITED for this one! This red velvet cake is so incredibly soft, full of flavour and is topped with the most delicious cream cheese buttercream. I couldn't think of a better match!
This is an updated version of my original red velvet cake recipe. I tweaked it slightly and came up with this version which I am IN LOVE WITH! I hope you all love it just as much :)
HOMEMADE CAKE RELEASE:
CREAM CHEESE BUTTERCREAM:
INGREDIENTS:
2¼ cups (275 g) flour - regular all purpose (see note 3 on blog post if you want to use cake flour)
3 tbsp (18 g) cornflour - also known as cornstarch
3 tbsp (14 g) cocoa powder - unsweetened
½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt - omit if using salted butter
6 tbsp (86 g) unsalted butter - room temperature
¾ cup (141 g) unflavoured vegetable oil - I use canola
1¾ cups (344 g) white granulated sugar
3 large eggs - room temperature
1 tbsp (12 g) vanilla essence/extract
1½ tsp white vinegar
3½ tbsp (38 g) red liquid food colouring
¾ cup (158 g) buttermilk - room temperature
Bake at 160 °C (320°F) with the fan on. If your oven doesn't have a fan option, then you will need to increase the baking temperature to 175°C (347°F).
