Green Bean Casserole

Ingredients
2 pounds fresh green beans, ends cut off
Salt
4 slices bacon, cut into 1/4-inch pieces
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1/2 whole large onion, chopped
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups whole milk, plus extra for thinning if needed
1/2 cup half-and-half
Freshly ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 cup grated sharp Cheddar
1 cup panko breadcrumbs
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Cut the green beans in half if you like the pieces to be a little smaller. Blanch the green beans: drop them into lightly salted boiling water and allow the green beans to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Remove them from the boiling water with a slotted spoon and immediately plunge into a bowl of ice cold water to stop the cooking process. Drain the beans once they're cool and set aside.
Add the bacon pieces to a skillet over medium heat. Cook the bacon for 2 minutes, and then add the peppers, garlic and onions, and continue cooking until the bacon is done (but not crisp) and the onions are golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside.
In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Sprinkle the flour into the pan and whisk immediately to evenly mix it into the butter. Cook for a minute or 2, and then pour in the milk and half-and-half. Continue cooking, whisking constantly, while the sauce thickens, about 2 minutes. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, some black pepper and the cayenne, and then add the grated cheese. Stir while the cheese melts. Turn off the heat.
Add the bacon/onion mixture and stir to combine. Add the green beans and stir gently to combine. Pour into a baking dish and top with the panko. Bake until the sauce is bubbly and the panko is golden, about 30 minutes.

Four Cheese Green Bean Casserole | I Heart Recipes
Hey everybody! My Four Cheese Green Bean Casserole is perfect for the holidays. Give it a try!
This crowd-pleasing green bean casserole is a must-have at your next Thanksgiving dinner. This recipe is also great for using up Thanksgiving leftovers. It’s super easy, quick to assemble and tastes divine! Place fresh or frozen green beans in a baking dish. Top with onions, cooked turkey breast and cheeses (I used Harvati, Gouda, Cheddar and Mozzarella). In a separate bowl, whisk together cream of chicken soup (cream of celery or mushroom could easily be substituted) along with chicken broth, and pour over the green beans. Stir everything until well combined. Top with more cheese (y’all know I love cheese!), cover and bake. After about 40 minutes, uncover, top with fried onions and bake until it’s a nice golden brown. Fam, this dish is so good! This Four Cheese Green Bean Casserole will make all of those other green bean casseroles take a back seat. Simply delicious!

This Old Fashioned Green Bean Casserole is made completely from scratch. It's the best green bean casserole recipe you'll ever make and is sure to become an instant family favorite. It’s perfect for holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter as well as family dinners in between.
How do you make green bean casserole with fresh green beans?
When using fresh green beans in green bean casserole you must first trim the ends of each green bean. Oftentimes, based on size, it may also be necessary to snap the green bean in half. When green beans are baked, as in green bean casserole, they come out tender crisp. If you are used to and prefer a much softer green bean, you can par-boil or even par-steam your green beans before using them in the recipe. Simply steam or boil your green beans for 10 minutes prior to using in the recipe. If you plunge them into an ice bath immediately after cooking it will help them retain a more vibrant shade of green.
INGREDIENTS
CRISPY ONION TOPPING:
2 white onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons panko bread crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE
1/2 pound bacon, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup half and half
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 1/2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and halved
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Lightly grease a baking sheet. In a large mixing bowl, toss sliced onions together with 1/4 cup flour, panko bread crumbs, and salt. Spread out in an even layer on the baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, tossing every 10 minutes.
2. Meanwhile, cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Do not drain the grease. Add in garlic and saute 30 seconds. Stir in flour until completely dissolved. Pour in chicken broth, half and half, black pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a boil and let simmer until thickened, about 3 minutes.
3. Place green beans into a lightly greased 9x13 pan. Pour bacon mixture over the green beans and toss to coat. Sprinkle the cooked, crisp onions on top. Bake in the 450 degree oven for 15 minutes. Serve hot.
