Kern's Kitchen - Derby Pie | Kentucky Life | KET
There are many chocolate nut pies, but Kern's Kitchen has the trademark for Derby-Pie®.
George Kern, along with his parents, Walter and Leaudra Kern, created the secret recipe at Melrose Inn in Prospect over 50 years ago. Yes, there is chocolate, and there are walnuts, but the exact recipe remains a closely held secret.
Today the Kern grandchildren run the family business, and the pies are still filled by hand.
The pies are available at restaurants in Louisville, Lexington, and other Kentucky cities, as well as in Indiana and Ohio. You can also order the pies directly from Kern's, or you can find them at select grocery stores.
