Frikadellen: A Must-Try German Meatball Dish
In this video, I'm excited to take on the challenge of making Frikadellen, a popular German dish, with the help of my partner Mike who is the taste tester. Mike is from Germany and grew up with his mum cooking this dish.
Frikadellen are a type of meat patty made with a combination of pork and beef mince, soaked bread, onions, and various herbs and spices. They are delicious, juicy, and a staple in German cuisine. Follow along as I walk you through the recipe and show you how easy it is to make these tasty treats at home!
Ingredients:
4 slices of bread (stale is good) or 2 big bread rolls
milk to cover bread
2 medium onions
1/2 bunch parsley
4 cloves garlic
500 grams beef mince
500 grams pork mince
2 whole eggs
3 teaspoons sea salt
2 teaspoons cracked black pepper
2 teaspoons dried marjoram
2 heaped teaspoons paprika powder
3 teaspoons prepared mustard
oil & butter for frying
Directions:
Soak the bread in milk.
Peel and finely dice the onions.
Chop up the parsley and garlic.
Place the pork and beef mince in a bowl.
Add the soaked bread, onions, parsley, garlic, eggs, sea salt, black pepper, marjoram leaves, paprika powder, and mustard to the bowl.
Knead the mixture thoroughly with your hands.
Form the patties and put a small piece of butter in the middle of each patty.
Cover the patties and place them in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to firm up.
Warm up a heavy-based pan and add some olive oil and butter.
Gently place the patties into the pan and cook them over low heat for about 12 minutes, turning them frequently.
Serve the Frikadellen with whatever you please or put them in a hamburger bun. Today I served them with mashed potato, broccolini and mayo with my delicious home-made Tomato Relish.
Tips:
Don't skimp on the bread as it makes the Frikadellen juicy and light.
Kneading the mixture ensures the Frikadellen are super tender and juicy.
The little bit of butter in the middle of the patty ensures it doesn't dry out and remains moist.
Press down lightly on the patties to check if they're cooked through. They should still feel soft.
You can make the Frikadellen any size you wish.
Soak the bread in milk for at least 10-15 minutes.
Conclusion:
Making Frikadellen is easier than you think, and the end result is so delicious! With the combination of pork and beef mince, herbs, and spices, these Frikadellen are bursting with flavour. The addition of soaked bread and a little bit of butter makes them incredibly juicy and tender. Give this recipe a try and let us know how they turn out!
