Southern Tea Cakes Recipe - I Heart Recipes
Hey friends! I’m going to show you how to make Grandma’s Southern Tea Cakes:
Start out by placing your flour into a large bowl. Along with the flour add the baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt. Sift the ingredients until well combined, then set the bowl to the side. In a separate large bowl, place the butter and butter flavored shortening and cream the two ingredients together. Add the granulated sugar along with the butter and shortening, and mix until well combined, then add in the eggs. Next, add in the buttermilk/sour milk and the vanilla extract. Mix until all of the wet ingredients are well combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients along with the wet. Once all of the ingredients are well combined, and the cookie dough has formed, flour a flat surface, and roll out the dough using a roll pin. Cut out the desired shapes for the cookies / tea cakes, and place them on wax paper. Chill the dough in the refrigerator in the freezer for 10 minutes. Place a baking mat on your cookie sheet ( or skip the baking sheet, it's up to you) , and spray it with baking spray. Place the tea cakes on the cookie sheet, leaving at least 1 inch between each cookie. Bake the tea cakes on 350* F for 7-8 minutes. Remove the tea cakes from the oven, place them on a cooling rack until they are cool to the touch. ENJOY!!

Old-Fashioned Southern Tea Cakes Recipe- Remember these?
❤️GET THE COOKBOOK:
❤️ SUBSCRIBE: If you grew up in the South chances are you had a “ tea cake lady” or an “ icee lady” on your street! I had both and I still remember those old fashioned Southern tea cakes like it was yesterday. What a nostalgic treat!
I can never find when & where these little “cakes” originated from but they are one of those super old recipes that require only a few ingredients which made them really affordable back in the day. Some folks say they were called Great Depression cookies but they date back waaaaaay further than that!
Now depending on where you’re from in the South determines how you like your tea cakes usually, or at least what you consider to be “an authentic tea cake” . Some like them crunchy and plain, others like them drizzled in glaze and some like them just like this recipe: fluffy & tender in the middle, chewy around the edges with golden, barely crisp bottoms.
Tea cakes are like the love child of a cake, cookie, and biscuit, yet they taste like sweet, flavorful cornbread or pound cake with faint flavors of nutmeg and vanilla.
Now though, it seems like tea cakes are almost a forgotten recipe. Other bolder tea treats have taken their place, which is a shame! They aren’t gonna knock your socks off or anything but they are simple, easy, plain and unique in their own way…and something about that makes them extra special.
Pile them up on a plate, put on some tea, invite your girls over and chat the afternoon away!!

Old Recipe For Tea Cakes, Thanks Patty
Here's Patty's great-great grandmother's recipe:
Patty Miles 21 hours ago (edited)
Hi Mrs Phyllis- I make my grandmothers tea cake cookies all the time and I believe I know exactly what Mr.Bucky is talking about. This recipe was passed down from my great - great grandmother to my Mamaw who passed it on to her daughters.- and so on. She was from Tennessee. When my mother became ill and was no longer able to stir the batter with a wooden spoon and no mixer strong enough to mix the dough- she ended up using her hand to mix the dough and we've been using that method ever since. Saves a ton and I mean a ton of time. The end result is a tea cookie that tastes real sweet, buttery, and a slightly salty with crispy or crunchy edges. Out of this world is the destinct flavor of these cookies. I hope you try these. By the way- when the dough is formed its sticky- and you just literally reach in the bowl and pinch off teaspoon sized or tablespoon sized amount and roll them into a ball and put on baking sheet. No flour - and no mashing down like a biscuit. It will do all that itself in the oven. I KNOW this sounds as crazy as it gets but it's the way it goes. Just try it and I guarantee you y'all will LOVE the taste and how easy it is to make them. And I just feel certain this is exactly the tea cake cookie his grandmother made.
Here's the recipe:
1 1/2 c sugar
1 c butter (2sticks)softened
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 c white lily self rising flour
Believe it or not start with the sugar and just down the line and put every ingredient in the bowl- the dive in with your two hands and mix. When it's completely mixed, the dough will sort of pull away from the edge of the bowl. Make balls and put on any size pan you have. Makes up to 2dozen depending on the size you make. Cook at 350 and when u see the edges begin to turn a medium golden color or darker if u prefer- their done.
Thanks Patty, these tea cakes are delicious. Mr. Bucky also says thanks Patty. This recipe is a keeper for sure.
Thank for watching.
