In The Kitchen With My Toddler | Making Paintbrush Cookies
Today my little girl and I are making Paintbrush Cookies from her Betty Crocker Cookbook for Boys and Girls. This was quite an adventure! Haha Cooking with a toddler is very messy and requires a lot of patience. I think this kind of thing will be easier the older she gets but I enjoy sharing my kitchen with her.
Recipe:
Cookies-
1/2 c soft shortening
1/3 c sugar
1 egg
2/3 c honey
1 t vanilla
2 3/4 c all purpose flour
1 t baking soda
1 t salt
Paint:
1 egg yolk
1 T water
Food coloring
Heat oven to 375. Mix first 5 ingredients with handheld mixer. Mix flour, salt, and baking soda in separate bowl. Add slowly to wet mixture and blend. Let chill in freezer for about 2 hours. Turn onto floured surface and roll with flour covered rolling pin to 1/4”. Cut out shapes and place on greased cookie sheet. Mix ingredients for paint and place in separate containers. Add a few drops food coloring to each container and using a paintbrush, paint cookies.Bake 8-10 min. Try to pull them out before they get brown so the color stays vibrant.

How to paint gold on cookies!
Hi again, hope you enjoy this video showing you how to use different techniques to paint gold on cookies. Whenever my cookies need that something extra to make them perfect, I add a little gold.
For the best results you want to make sure you are using alcohol with the highest percentage you can find. I am using Everclear which is 90% alcohol. You want it to be on the thicker side when you mix it so it gives you nice coverage. The alcohol evaporates quickly so you don´t need to worry about children eating the cookies. You can also use lemon extract, just note it will give you a lemony taste on your cookies.
Happy painting!
What To Bake This Christmas | Easy Painted Sugar Cookies!
- - The holiday season is busy enough without crazy, time-consuming cookie decorating thrown into the mix! That's why these painted royally iced sugar cookies are my absolute FAVORITE holiday cookie! Your friends, family, and co-workers will adore them for their beauty, and you will adore them for their ease!
Most royally iced Christmas cookies require an outline icing, a flooding icing, the first layer of royal icing, dry time, followed by a second layer of royal icing...followed by even more dry time. No, thank you!
With this Painted Royally Iced Sugar Cookie recipe, I've got the trick to a royal icing that works as both the outline and flooding icing and a decorating technique that requires no skill and comes together fast!
Here's what you'll need:
- Baked Sugar Cookies
⬇️ Here's my favorite sugar cookie recipe!!!
For the Royal Icing:
- 3 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 tablespoon Meringue Powder found at specialty craft stores
- 3 ounces Warm Water
- 1/2 teaspoon Almond Extract
For the Decorating
- 1 tablespoon gel food coloring + 2 teaspoons water in a small bowl
- 1 1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder + 2-3 tablespoons water in a small bowl
- Food safe paint brushes
To Make and Royally Ice Your Sugar Cookies:
In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine powdered sugar, meringue powder, water and extract. Begin mixing on low until powdered sugar has absorbed the liquid ingredients, then increase speed to high. Alternatively, use a large mixing bowl and a handheld mixer.
To ensure the icing is the right consistency, test it by allowing icing to drip from the paddle attachment or beaters. It should take about 30 seconds before the fallen icing loses its shape and melds into the rest of the icing.
To apply the icing to the cookie, pipe a line of icing about an eighth of an inch from the edge of the cookie. This is also called outlining. Do not pipe directly on the edge. Then, pipe in a tight and compact zig-zag pattern to fill the inside of the cookie. This is also called flooding.
Allow the cookies to dry completely!
Prepare your workstation by laying a large sheet of wax paper on the counter, and placing the cookies upon it. Have ready your cookie paint and brushes.
Before making brush strokes on the cookies, dip the brush into the food coloring mixture and press the brush against the sides of the bowl to rid of any excess liquid.
Gently make brush strokes on the cookies as desired. Set aside until completely dry, 4-5 hours.

Painting on Cookies!
For my birthday, my friend Karen (baker extrodinaire) gave me a super creative gift ~ a painting cookie kit. It had brushes, gel dye, glitter dust and royal iced blank cookies for my canvases. What a cool present and it opened up a whole new world for me. Two of my favorite things into one: good food and art! :D
It's not hard to do either - here's a video to show you how you can paint on cookies too! Enjoy!! xoxo!
