Don’t pinch yourself. No, you’re not in the deep Southern States of the USA. And yes, you can find some of the world’s best fried chicken in London. The energetic Amy Shuster graces your YouTube screen to bring you her latest taste review of Spit & Roast’s famous fried chicken sandwich, putting to rest the age old presumption that the tastiest fried chicken is only made in the USA.
Sure, fried chicken does originate from the United States. In fact, the fried chicken dish is a prized African-American trademark, and many people have made their own renditions of one of the tastiest snacks in the world. What makes Southern fried chicken so appealing is that the method of frying in fat and oil seals the meat, keeping it juicy and tender in the centre. The crispy surface is made even more crispy by the fact that it is often dusted in flour, breadcrumbs, buttermilk, and a small, secretive, prized collection of spices.
Whilst Amy was exploring the bohemian Spitalfields Market in London (a wonderfully bizarre collection of craft markets and street food stalls) her keen ear heard that a famous food van was making its way into the parking lot. It’d be bringing with it a serious amount of street food cred, and while all the other stores tried in vain to outsell the Spit & Roast food van, Amy was completely hooked by their famous fried chicken bap.
Started by Ross and Justin, two splendid mates, the Spit & Roast food truck was assembled and made its way onto the streets of London. The owners in tow were adamant in delivering their tasty products to the public, tired of the continuing pressures of the restaurant kitchen. Eager to try something new they developed their own variation of the Southern fried chicken, and placed it on a golden brown bap. But something was missing. Like Tolkien’s Samwise was to Frodo, the Korean hot sauce completed the fried chicken bap, and now we can all sample Spit & Roast’s glorious creation. Spit & Roast doesn’t stop at fried chicken. They also do a magnificent golden rotisserie chicken, as well as their own famous poutine. What’s a poutine? Glad you asked. Poutine is a Canadian dish whereby mounds of French fries are topped with cheese curds and then drenched in steaming hot gravy. Yummy!
Fried chicken isn’t the only dish with origins in the American deep South. Biscuits (that’s scones in the UK) and gravy, grits (that’s a corn based porridge to the untutored) and cheese, collard greens and cornbread. These are all dishes loved by the South. One thing they don’t have though is the popularity which has prompted the fried chicken dish to travel around the world in a multitude of local renditions; much like the fried chicken bap at Spit & Roast.
