Grandmother's Plum Good Cake Recipe aka Baby Food Cake
The Plum Good Cake is a cake my grandmother used to make. It's also called a Plum Cake or a Baby Food Cake. This cake has a delicious warm spice flavor with a nice slightly crunchy outside and a soft, moist inside. The icing refreshingly ties it all together!
cake:
2 cups self rising flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 eggs
2 jars plum baby food (or any dark fruit flavored baby food: prunes, blueberries, etc)
icing:
1 cup confectioners sugar
juice from 1 lemon (or enough to make the sugar into a drizzle)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Mix together all dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cinnamon, cloves) into a mixing bowl and stir.
Add wet ingredients (vegetable oil, vanilla extract, eggs, baby food) and mix together.
Grease a bundt pan and pour cake batter evenly into it.
Place in oven on the middle rack and bake for 45 minutes.
Let the cake cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
While cooling, mix together the confectioners sugar and the lemon juice to form your icing.
Invert, ice, slice, serve, and enjoy!

German Plum Cake (Oma Hennie’s Pflaumenkuchen)
My husband’s Oma (German for “Grandma”) passed on this recipe to him 19 years ago by showing how to make it. No written recipe, so he watched and wrote down the ingredients and steps the best he could as Oma demonstrated it. It took ten tries before he got it tasting exactly like Oma’s.
Ingredients (Yields 3 cakes)
Yeast Dough:
6 cups flour
1 cup sugar
3 Tsp yeast
1-1/2 STICKS of butter (room temperature)
3 cups whole milk
German Streusel (Butter crumb topping):
2 STICKS butter (room temperature)
1 cup sugar
1-1/2 to 2 cups flour
2 Tsp Vanilla Extract
7-8 ripe black plums, sliced into 16 pieces, and tossed with 1-1/2 Tbsp sugar. (Italian Prune Plums are ideal)
Directions
Yeast Dough:
1) Mix Dry ingredients (flour, sugar & yeast)in a large bowl.
2) In a medium sauce pan, melt butter over low heat.
3) Add milk to butter and bring to approximately 120 degrees F (Very Warm; do not allow it to get hot, much less DO NOT BOIL); touch-test can be done at your own risk!
(At this point, preheat oven on Bake at 350 degrees F)
4) Add milk & butter mixture to dry ingredients, and mix with wooden spoon, eventually vigorously by hand.
5) Dough should be slightly sticky; Dust with flour until manageable (soft, warm, and not sticky).
6) Split dough into 3 equal parts. Form each piece gently into a mound, placing it in the center of a butter-greased 14-inch round pizza pan.
7) Cover dough with a towel & allow to rise for 45- to 60-mins next to the preheating oven.
(Prepare Streusel as dough rises)
8) Combine butter, sugar & vanilla, until creamy consistency.
9) Add flour, and mix well with wooden spoon to incorporate, eventually mixing by hand.
10) Depending on temperature and type of butter used, up to a 1/2 cup of flour might have to be added in order for it to have the right consistency as in the video. Set aside.
11) After dough has risen, dust with flour and press gently from the center-out with a raised edge for the crust, such as a pizza.
12) Brush egg wash onto the crust and anywhere the Streusel will be placed.
13) Arrange sweetened plums and Streusel into your own design.
14) Raise oven temperature to 410 degrees F, and bake cake for 15 mins.
Enjoy!
PS. Leftovers can remain in pans, covered with foil, overnight and throughout the next day. Be sure to refrigerate the next night. Reheat in microwave for 10 SECONDS for the perfect experience.
