Every Style of Hot Dog We Could Find Across the US
Hot dogs are about as American as apple pie. It's not uncommon for different states to offer their unique spins on classic American cuisine, and the hot dog industry is no exception. While some stands and shops take inspiration from other popular local cuisines for their toppings (like adding coleslaw or fish sticks to their classic franks and buns), others insist on layering, excluding, or adding ingredients to ensure their dogs remain a distinct staple to their regional style.

Kraut Dog with Mustard - Quick & Easy Recipe
This is the way I make my hot dogs. Nothing much to the recipe, it's an anti-recipe. Pick any type of hot dog you like including vegan. I get sauerkraut from the can & yellow mustard from a squeeze bottle. And visit my cooking blog for more recipes done artfully & with humor:
Directions Hot Dog - I place a steamer basket in a pot with an inch or so of water. Add the weiner(s) and bring the water to a low simmer then cover the pot. I like to steam mine until plump, about 5 minutes. If you are steaming a lot then check the water level from time to time to refill.
Hot Dog Bun - I also steam them until pillowy and soft. I put a bun or two right on top of my steamed hot dog, cover the pot, and steam the bun for a minute or so. A quick grill on the stovetop softens them quite nicely.
Mustard - I like generic yellow mustard but I will splurge on Dijon Mustard. Sometimes I go for Whole Grain Spicy Mustard.
Sauerkraut - from the jar or can. I heat some on the stovetop in a pot. Make sure to shake out the brine liquid before putting it in a bun or your first bite will be soggy.
