How To make Advent Cookies
Ingredients
1
cup
molasses, teacup or black treacle
7
ounces
brown sugar, light
9
tablespoons
cocoa powder
10
ounces
butter, or margarine, softened
1
pinch
cinnamon
1
teaspoon
vanilla
1
pound
flour, all-purpose, (approximately)
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 400 degree F.
Mix all of the ingredients together, except for the flour.
Add the flour slowly to the rest of the mixture until it reaches the right consistency to roll out. The dough should be quite soft. (You may find it easier to knead it with your hands.)
Roll out on a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/4 inch and cut into decorative shapes with small cookie cutters, a sharp knife or the rim of a glass.
Place on a greased baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 8 minutes. Remove from the oven while they are still soft and cool on a rack, then pack into crocks or jars.
The authors note that the Pennsylvania Dutch settlers made these at Thanksgiving and stored them in a stoneware crock until Christmas. The cookies can be made at any time, but allowed to age for 4-6 weeks.
They can be used as a substitute for graham crackers for a pie crust.

Today is Day #6 of our advent calendar collab! This 24-Day video series is a collaboration with Georgia from Carnival of Creativity. Make sure to check out all her videos as well and subscribe if you haven’t done that already.
Today I am showing you how to make Vanilla Crescents (Vanillekipferl) – a traditional German Christmas cookie.
Ingredients:
250g (2 cups) flour
1 tip of knife baking powder
125g (1/2 cup + 2 TBSP) sugar
1 package (1/2 TBSP) vanilla sugar
3 egg yolks
200g butter (3/4 cup + 1/8 cup at room temperature)
125g (1 cup) skinned ground almonds
50g (1/2 cup) powdered sugar
1 package (1/2 TBSP) vanilla sugar
1. Preheat your oven to 190C (375F). Mix the flour and baking powder in a bowl. Add sugar, vanilla sugar, egg yolk, butter and almonds and mix until a dough forms.
2. Sprinkle the work surface with flour, divide the dough into a few parts and start rolling it until rolls start forming. You want them to be about as thick as your thumb.
3. Cut the dough into 2cm wide ( ¾”) pieces. Take a piece and start bending it into a banana-like shape, then start forming it with your fingers into a crescent shapes and flatten it while doing that. Repeat with the rest of the dough.
4. Place the cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 minutes. In the meantime, mix the powdered sugar and vanilla sugar.
5. Slide the cookies onto a cooling rack, let them cool for a few minutes, then dip them into the powdered sugar mixture. Enjoy!
