The Food That Made Spartans Strong
Mélas Zōmós, Black Broth! This food was eaten by the Spartans and they definitely received a reputation for it. Many ancient writers looked back at it and revered it for the was it gave Spartans their strength but also how absolutely horrible the dish was, mostly by those outside of Spartan culture.
Only a Spartan could truly enjoy black broth.
Recipe:
1lb pork diced
1 large onion
1 half cup white wine vinegar
1 tbsp olive oil
3-4 cups water
3 bay leaves
Salt
2 cups pig’s blood
Chop your onion and brown in a pot with olive oil. Then add pork and sear for 10 minutes.
Add vinegar to deglaze the pot and pour in the water. Add bay leaves and salt. Simmer covered for 45 min.
Stir in blood and simmer again for 15 minutes adding additional water if it becomes to thick. Stir frequently once blood is added.
Enjoy (maybe with some barley bread, cheese, berries, anything you wish, don’t worry it won’t help)
Overall not bad, it’s just so one dimensional and lacking of flavor. Spice and barley added would help texture and kick it up a bit. It is like a soup form of a very bland blood sausage.
