-savers Or other colorful hard candy Recipe by: St. Louis Post-Dispatch 8/5/96 In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt; set aside. In a large mixer bowl, beat butter and shortening together. Add sugar and beat until light and fluffy; beat in egg and extract. With mixer at low speed, gradually blend in flour mixture just until well-mixed. Turn dough out onto a sheet of plastic wrap, cover with another sheet, flatten into a disc and chill until firm, 15 to 30 minutes. While the dough is chilling, give each child a few 3-by-5-inch index cards. Cut each card to resemble a pair of sunglasses (just the frames, not the temples); set patterns aside. Divide Life Savers by colors. Place each color in a freezer-weight zipper-sealed plastic bag and crack coarsely with a tin can or meat mallet. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place about half the dough on a surface lightly sprinkled with flour. Sprinkle dough lightly with additional flour and roll to about 1/4-inch thick. Lay sunglasses patterns on dough and cut around. Cut holes for "lenses" out of each cookie, leaving "frame" at least 1/2-inch wide all around. Lift cookies onto a lightly greased, foil-lined
baking sheet. Spoon crushed candy into lens holes, filling level with top of cookie. Bake 7 to 9 minutes; let cool completely on sheets. Carefully -----

50 SHADES OF TRUFFLES RECIPE
8oz dark chocolate chips
4oz (1/2 cup) heavy cream
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
3/4 cup cocoa powder (to dust the truffles)
1. Heat cream until hit to the touch, but not boiling.
2. Pour cream over chocolate and let sit for 30 seconds, then stir vigorously until chocolate is melted.
3. Add cinnamon, cayenne, and salt. Stir until well combined.
4. Add vanilla extract.
5. Pour mixture into a bowl and refrigerate 45-60 mins until the mixture is solid like a soft fudge. This is ganache.
6. Scoop about 1-2 tablespoons of cooled ganache and roll into a ball.
7. Place balls on parchment lined plate and refrigerate 35 minutes. (Or if you are in a rush, place in freezer for 20 mins)
8. Remove chilled balls and toss into the cocoa.
9. Shake off the excess cocoa and place on a plate.
10. SERVE & ENJOY or store in fridge until ready to eat.
Makes about 16-18 truffles
